A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA ENCOURAGING
GOVERNOR JEB BUSH TO DEVELOP AND
IMPLEMENT A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES A
MONETARY MILITARY DEATH LUMP -SUM PAYMENT
TO THE NEXT OF KIN AND/OR FAMILIES OF
FLORIDA SERVICE MEMBERS KILLED IN COMBAT
DURING THE CONFLICTS IN AFGHANISTAN AND
IRAQ; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO PROVIDE A
COPY TO GOVERNOR JEB BUSH: PROVIDING FOR
CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, in October 2001 the United States entered into armed conflict
in Afghanistan and in March 2003 the United States entered into armed conflict in
Iraq; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac, Florida wishes to see the surviving next
of kin and/or families of Florida service members killed in combat, compensated
financially, allowing them to focus on emotional recovery; and
WHEREAS, certain states currently provide monetary military death lump -
sum payments and others are currently reviewing legislation, which will allow
them to provide similar programs; and
WHEREAS, the federal government currently provides a military death
lump -sum payment of $12,420 to the survivors of service members killed in

combat in Iraq and Afghanistan; and is close to approving legislation that will
increase that payment to $100,000; and
WHEREAS, the State of Florida currently provides other benefits to its
service members, including but not limited to: prepaid tuition for children of
killed in combat, preferential licensing treatment, and in some cases, property
exemption during deployment; and
WHEREAS, the Commission of the City of Tamarac encourages Gove
Jeb Bush to develop and implement a program that provides a monetary milita
death lump -sum payment to the next of kin and/or family members of Florida
service members killed in combat during the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION 01
THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby
ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific
part of this Resolution.
SECTION 2: The Commission of the City of Tamarac, Florida
hereby encourages Governor Jeb Bush to develop and implement a program th,
provides a monetary military death lump -sum payment to the next of kin and/or
family members of Florida service members killed in combat during the conflicts
in Afghanistan and Iraq.
SECTION 3: The City Clerk is hereby directed to provide a copy
this Resolution to Governor Jeb Bush.

SECTION 4: If any clause, section, other part or application of this
Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or
invalid, in part or application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining
portions or applications of this Resolution.
SECTION 5: This Resolution shall become effective immediately
upon its passage and adoption.
