CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA
RESOLUTION NO. R-97- 1.6
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING AND
COMMEMORATING FEBRUARY 1997 AS BLACK
HISTORY MONTH; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS;
PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING
AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac is proud to number among its citizenry people
of African -American descent and join Broward County, the State of Florida and the
Nation in commemorating February 1997 as "Black History Month"; and
WHEREAS, Black History Month and the recognition of its significance has its
origin dating back to 1926 when the father of black history, Carter G. Woodson,
conceived Negro History Week; and
WHEREAS, the rich history and heritage of African -Americans is documented in
such fields as education, medicine, science, arts, music, dance, architecture, drama,
athletics and engineering, as well as many others; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac, Florida, deems it to be
in the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City of Tamarac to proudly
declare the month of February 1997 as "Black History Month".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA:

SECTION 1: That the foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and
confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this
Resolution.
SECTION 2: That the month of February 1997 shall be declared "Black History
Month" within the City of Tamarac and the entire community is urged to join in the
celebration of this historical observance.
SECTION 3: That the City Clerk will distribute copies of the official resolution to
the Broward County Commission, Broward League of Cities and NAACP.
SECTION 4: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby
repealed to the extent of such conflict.
SECTION_L. If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is
held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or
application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this
Resolution.

SECTION 6: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption.
