CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA
RESOLUTION NO. R-97-c235
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, URGING THE UNITED STATES
CONGRESS TO APPROPRIATE AT LEAST $2 MILLION IN
FY 1998 ENERGY AND WATER DEVELOPMENT FUNDS
FOR LOCAL SPONSOR REIMBURSEMENT AND CORPS OF
ENGINEERS REVIEW OF ENGINEERING DESIGN AND
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES FOR THE BROWARD COUNTY
SHORE PROTECTION PROJECT; PROVIDING FOR
CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, beaches are the most important factor influencing tourists to visit
Florida; and
WHEREAS, the 21.6 million tourists who visit Florida's beaches directly spend $7.9
billion, create 359,000 jobs, and generate $15.4 billion for Florida's economy; and
WHEREAS, seven million foreign tourists visit Florida each year, with 2.3 million
from Canada, who stay an average of 21 days each and spend $1.6 billion annually; and
WHEREAS, beaches are also Broward County's number one tourist attraction,
generating almost $600 million in annual economic impact and 17,900 full-time equivalent
jobs for Broward County, and $800 million and 26,000 jobs in the tri-county region; and
WHEREAS, chronic erosion and recent severe storms have eroded Broward
County's beaches such that the tourism economy of the County is threatened and upland
properties, infrastructure, and lives are increasingly vulnerable to storm wave and flood
damage; and

WHEREAS, Section 227 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1996 (Public
Law 104-303) reaffirms the value of the Nation's beaches and mandates continued federal
participation in shore protection and beach nourishment, and Section 506 of the Act directs
the Secretary of the Army to carry out beach nourishment in Broward County, Florida; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac, Florida, deems it to be in
the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City of Tamarac that the United States
Congress be urged to appropriate at least $2 million in FY 1998 funds specifically for local
sponsor reimbursement and Corps of Engineers review of engineering/design and
environmental studies for the Broward County Shore Protection Project.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: That the foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and
confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution.
SECTION 2: That the City Commission of the City of Tamarac strongly urges the
United States Congress to appropriate at least $2 million in FY 1998 funds specifically for
local sponsor reimbursement and Corps of Engineers review of engineering/design and
environmental studies for the Broward County Shore Protection Project.
SECTION 3: The City Commission authorizes and directs that copies of this
resolution be furnished to Florida's United States Senators and to Broward County's United
States Representatives.
SECTION 4: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby
repealed to the extent of such conflict.
SECTION 5: If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is
held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or
application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this
Resolution.

SECTION 6: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its passage
and adoption.
