R-2021- ©SF A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF MAY 2021, AS HAITIAN HERITAGE MONTH, AND MAY 18, 2021 AS HAITIAN FLAG DAY; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Haitian Americans constitute a large minority community in the City of Tamarac and make significant contributions to the cultural diversity and richness of the City ; and II/ WHEREAS, Haitian Heritage Cultural Month is a nationally recognized month and an opportunity for individuals including Haitians and lovers of the Haitian culture to celebrate the rich culture, distinctive art, delicious food and learn the traditions of Haiti and its people; and WHEREAS, the celebration is an expansion of the Haitian Flag Day on May 18th, a major patriotic day celebration in Haiti and the Diaspora created to encourage patriotism ; and WHEREAS, May 18th has been celebrated as Haitian Flag Day for generations, commemorating the flag's creation in 1803 by Jean-Jacques Dessaline at the Congress of Arcahaie and recognizing the history, culture and heritage of the Haitian people as they created their nation through a struggle for Temp. Reso. #13619 May 19, 2021 Page 2 of 3 freedom that resonated across the globe and inspired independence movements 1111 in Latin America, Asia, and Africa; and WHEREAS, Commissioner Gelin is requesting the City of Tamarac recognize the month of May as Haitian Heritage Month and May 18, 2021, as Haitian Flag Day; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA THAT: SECTION 1: The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. All exhibits attached hereto are incorporated herein and made a specific part of this Resolution. SECTION 2: The City Commission, of the City of Tamarac, hereby recognizes the Month of May 2021, as Haitian Heritage Day, and May 18, 2021, as Haitian Flag Day in the City of Tamarac. SECTION 3: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict. SECTION 4: If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this Resolution. SECTION 5: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption. Temp.
