ORDINANCE NO. 0-97-/7
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA,
AMENDING SECTION 24-580 OF THE
TAMARAC CODE, ENTITLED
"SPECIFICATIONS", CLARIFYING THE
REQUIREMENTS FOR FIRE ACCESS AREAS,
FIRE LANES, SPEED CONTROLS AND
SECURITY DEVICES; PROVIDING FOR
CODIFICATION; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS;
PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Tamarac Fire Department currently provides fire and rescue service
to the residents and businesses of the CITY; and
WHEREAS, access to buildings is important for the quick identification of a fire
location, the extinguishment of the fire and for the rescue of persons located within the
structure; and
WHEREAS, current requirements are insufficient to meet emergency access needs
of the department; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac has deemed it to be in the
best interest of the citizens and residents of the City of Tamarac to amend the fire access
and fire lane sections of the city code and allow certain speed control and security devices.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: That the foregoing whereas clauses are hereby ratified and
confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Ordinance
upon adoption hereof.
SECTION 2: Section 24-580 is amended as follows.

(1) Accessibility for Fire Apparatus.
Fire Access Areas
LM All buildings and structures other than single-family or duplex
residences shall have a minimum of one 1 side of the building, in
addition to the front, accessible to fire apparatus.

In addition, all structures or buildings greater than thirty (30) feet in
height shall have fire access areas on a minimum of three (3) sides.
Lc) The distance of separation between the side of the building and all
other habitable buildings and structures shall be a minimum of thirty
30 feet.
�d) Fire access areas shall be no closer than ten 10 feet nor further than
thirty (30) feet from the building_
Lej Access areas shall lead directly from a public street or roadway- or fire
lane to the rear edge of the structure on either a paved surface aver
blocks or sod on crushed rock with concrete rids capable of
supporting -vehicles weighing up to thirty two (32) tons.
Mf If an access area is to be constructed of either paver blocks or sod on
crushed rock base with concrete grids, an affidavit certified by a civil
engineer licensed by the state shall be submitted to the fire
department to ensure support of a vehicle weighing thirty-two 32
tons.
�gj Fire access areas connecting to public streets, roadways or private
streets shall be provided with curb cuts extending at least two (2)-fee
beyond each edge of the fire access area.
Residential development access areas shall be constructed a
minimum of fourteen (14) feet wide.
fD Commercial development access areas shall be a minimum of twent
(20) feet wide.
fD Fire access areas shall be free of all obstructions including, but not
limited to, trees, dumpsters, _walls, fences, ornamental structures,
plumbing devices, and parking_

access area and shall not be blocked by any structure or landscaping.
The final configuration and location of the fire access areas shall be
indicated on the final site _plan -and _approved by the fire chief.
Fire Lanes
La) A fire lane is a roadpath or other passageway that allows the
passage of fire apparatus through developed property other than
single family and duplex residences. A fire lane, a minimum of twenty
feet wide, shall be provided to service all structures that do not abut
directly onto a public street or roadway.
fW The fire lane surface shall be constructed of asphalt.
Lc) Fire lanes shall be provided in the front of all commercial buildings,
except as provided in section of the Tamarac Code 24-580(I)(2)(d).
Fire lanes are not re uired for buildings with an approved firesprinkler
system when a firesprinkler system is not required by code.
Le) A private driveway or roadway may be utilized as a fire lane provided
that:
For residential developments with private_ streets, the drive
shall be posted with fire lane signs every two hundred (200)
feet.
ii For all other developments, the drive shall be posted with fire
lane signs eve seventy-five 75 feet.
iii Striping shall be required where there is continuous curbing, on
the paved surface for the length of the structure and extending -
fifty (50) feet beyond the structure or to the edge_of the
pavement, which ever is less. The pavement shall be painted
with parallel four -inch -wide yellow striped lines every five (5)

feet on center extending at least three (3)_feet from the edge
of pavement.
iv A route shall be provided for all fire apparatus to have a
forward means of exiting the drive with a minimum turning
radius of twenty-five 25 feet at the inside curb line and a
minimum radius of fifty 50 feet at the outside curb line clear
of all obstructions.
Lvj All paved roads shall have at least fourteen (14) feet of vertical
clearance, to allow for the passage of emergency vehicles.
Lv ij All turning areas shall provide fourteen 14 feet of vertical
clearance within ten (10t from the roadway to allow for the
overhang of emergency vehicles.
Ly i ij NO PARKING FIRE LANE signs and/or other designation
(striping) indicating that parking is prohibited shall be.provided
at normal and emergency access points to structures and
within ten (10) feet of each fire hydrant, sprinkler or standpipe
riser.
viii Fire lane sign size shall be 18 X 24 inches, white background
with red letters stating: "No ParkingFIRE LANE by order of the
Fire Dept., pursuant to ordinance number .11
fi xj For the purposes of this section the illustration attached hereto
as Exhibit "A" shall be a typical exa ale of residential and
commercial fire accessibility.
Maintenance of fire lanes fire access areas: duty to maintain enforcement
penalties.
Lal The land developer or owner shall provide to the city a
recordable instrument granting perpetual access to the subject
properly for public safety purposes, either as a dedicated plat,

ordained that the provisions of this Section shall become and be made a part of the Code
of Ordinances of the City of Tamarac, Florida, and that the Sections of this Ordinance may
be renumbered, relettered and the word "Ordinance" may be changed to "Section,"
"Article"
or such other word or phrase in order to accomplish such intention.
SECTION 4: All Ordinances or parts of Ordinances, and all Resolutions and
parts of Resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.
SECTION 5: If any provision of this Ordinance or the application thereof to
any person or circumstance is held invalid, such invalidity shall not affect other provisions
or applications of this Ordinance that can be given affect without the invalid provision or
application, and to this end the provisions of this Ordinance are declared to be severable.
