HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-02-26 - City Commission Special Meeting MinutesCITY OF TAMARAC SPECIAL CITY COMMISSION MEETING WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2014 CALL TO ORDER: Mayor Harry Dressler called the Special Commission Meeting of the City Commission to order at 1:01 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 in Conference Room 105, Tamarac City Hall, 7525 NW 88 Avenue, Tamarac, FL 33321. ROLL CALL: Mayor Harry Dressler, Vice Mayor Michelle J. Gomez, Commissioner Pamela Bushnell and Commissioner Diane Glasser were in attendance., Also in attendance were City Manager Michael Cernech, Assistant City Manager Diane Phillips, City Attorney Samuel S. Goren and City Clerk Patricia Teufel. Assistant City Attorney Jacob Horowitz joined the meeting at 1:55 p.m. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Mayor Dressler led the Pledge of Allegiance. City Attorney Goren said there were four more applicants to interview today and we would be following the same procedure as we did yesterday. City Attorney Goren said that after the interviews were conducted today we would need a consensus for a process for the meeting on Thursday, February 27, 2014. City Attorney Goren advised that there will be four more interviews today and went over the interview process with each applicant prior to their interviews and after the interviews City Attorney Goren said the final selection would be on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. City Attorney Goren advised the applicants to keep their phones handy as the City Clerk would be in contact with those that are requested to come back for a second interview. Throughout the remainder of the afternoon the following individuals were interviewed and responded to questions about their background, qualifications, community involvement and what they could bring to the table that would benefit Tamarac: Noreen Abrams, Ronald A. Friedman, Guido Ciervo and James M. Griffin. Vice Mayor Gomez disclosed that she knows Noreen Abrams and her husband from social functions around Tamarac. City Attorney Goren left the meeting at 1:55 p.m. and Assistant City Attorney Horowitz took over as counsel. City Attorney Horowitz went over the possible options the Commission had to appoint someone to the District 4 Commission seat and explained that if they were unable to come to a decision it was their prerogative to restart the process. There was a discussion among the Commission members regarding the number of candidates they would like to bring back on Thursday. It was decided that the Commission would choose their top four picks from the list provided to them by City Clerk Teufel. After City Clerk Teufel tabulated the selections it was decided by the Commission that the individuals that had three Commission members select them would be called back for a second interview. Mr. Griffin, Ms. Placko and Mr. Viverette would be brought in for a second interview on Thursday afternoon. Commissioner Bushnell seconded by Vice Mayor Gomez moved to bring back James M. Griffin, Debra Placko and Harold "Lee" Viverette for second interviews on Thursday, February 27, 2014. Motion passed unanimously (4-0). Page 1 of 2 SPECIAL COMMISSION MEETING February 26, 2014 City Manager Cernech said staff would begin the reference checks on Mr. Griffin, Ms. Placko and Mr. Viverette. There was a brief discussion regarding the necessity of doing reference checks. Human Resources Director Maria Swanson said staff will make every effort to have the reference checks completed by tomorrow afternoon. City Clerk Teufel was charged with calling Mr. Griffin, they were interested in coming back for a second charged with calling the other eight applicants back selected, thank them for submitting their applicants receiving a letter from the Mayor and Commission.
