HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-09-13 - City Commission Regular Meeting MinutesCITY OF TAMARAC REGULAR CITY COMMISSION MEETING CITY HALL CHAMBERS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2000 CALL TO ORDER: Mayor Schreiber called the Regular City Commission meeting to order at 7.00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 13, 2000, in Chambers, Tamarac City Hall, 7525 NW 88t" Avenue, Tamarac, FL. PRESENT: Mayor Joe Schreiber, Vice Mayor Karen L. Roberts, Commissioner Edward C. Portner, and Commissioner Marc L. Sultanof. ABSENT AND EXCUSED FOR CAUSE: Commissioner Larry Mishkin ALSO PRESENT: City Manager Jeffrey L. Miller, City Attorney Mitchell S. Kraft, and City Clerk Marion Swenson. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Mayor Schreiber called for the pledge of allegiance 1. PRESENTATION by Mayor Schreiber congratulating and commending the Friends of the Community Center, and Alan Pearlman accepted. 2. PRESENTATION by Mayor Schreiber of a proclamation recognizing September 131" as International Day of Peace in the City of Tamarac. 3. PRESENTATION by Mayor Schreiber of a proclamation recognizing September 18t" - 24th as National Pollution Prevention Week. 4. PRESENTATION by Mayor Schreiber of a proclamation proclaiming September 2000 as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Parks and Recreation Director Kathleen Margoles accepted. 5. PRESENTATION by Mayor Schreiber of a proclamation proclaiming September 20, 2000 as "Undoing Racism Day" and Public Information Officer Jay Moore accepted. 6. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: There was no public participation. REPORTS 7. City Commission: Commissioner Sultanof said he attended a meeting of the Library Advisory Board of Broward County and everything is on track. Tamarac is in the process of deeding land to the County and Cardigan and Associates, Architects, are moving forward with the $6.4 million library, and it is something to be proud of. There is September 13, 2000 1 a commitment from MediaOne (now ATU) to evaluate and provide a computer section for the library. Commissioner Portner said the grand opening for the Community Center is scheduled for this weekend and it is a beautiful and spectacular building. Vice Mayor Roberts thanked the Bulldogs for the appreciation dinner. Vice Mayor Roberts said the ground breaking for the new elementary school is scheduled for next month, and the school should be completed thereafter in about eight months. Additionally, boundary meetings will be starting soon. Vice Mayor Roberts said she hoped everyone would come to Saturday's grand opening of the Community Center. Mayor Schreiber said the event Saturday should be fantastic. There will be refreshments and activities for everyone, and they will be free. Mayor Schreiber spoke about the Community Center name and read a letter that was written to the Sun Sentinel by Helen and Harry Rosen. Vice Mayor Roberts, Commissioner Portner and Commissioner Sultanof expressed displeasure at Mayor Schreiber's reading of the letter and left the Commission Chambers.
