HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-11-10 - City Commission Special Meeting MinutesCITY OF TAMARAC SPECIAL CITY COMMISSION MEETING CITY HALL CHAMBERS MONDAY NOVEMBER 10, 2008 CALL TO ORDER: Mayor Flansbaum-Talabisco called the Special Meeting of the City Commission to order at 10:00 on Monday, November 10, 2008 in Chambers at Tamarac City Hall, 7525 NW 881h Avenue, Tamarac, Florida. PRESENT: Mayor Beth Flansbaum-Talabisco, Vice Mayor Marc L. Sultanof, Commissioner Edward C. Portner, Commissioner Patricia Atkins -Grad and Commissioner Harry Dressler. ALSO PRESENT: City Manager Jeffrey L. Miller, City Attorney Samuel S. Goren, and City Clerk Marion Swenson. BSO Color Guard presented the colors. Mayor Flansbaum-Talabisco led the pledge of allegiance and Chanya sang the National Anthem. 1. MOTION TO APPROVE Temporary Resolution #11503 declaring the results of the November 4, 2008 General Election for City Commission Districts 1 and 3. City Attorney Goren read Temporary Resolution 11503 by title. Commissioner Dressler seconded by Vice Mayor Sultanof moved approval. On roll call Commissioner Portner voted "yes", Commissioner Atkins -Grad "yes", Vice Mayor Sultanof "yes", Commissioner Dressler "yes", and Mayor Flansbaum-Talabisco "yes". Motion carried. RESOLUTION NO. R2008-161 2. OATH OF OFFICE administered by City Manager Jeffrey L. Miller to Pamela Bushnell, City Commission member District 1, and presentation of Certificate of Election. Dorothy Murphy, resident of District 1, and Ralph Baer, representing Senator Jeremy Ring, congratulated Commissioner Bushnell on her election to the City Commission. 3. OATH OF OFFICE administered by City Manager Jeffrey L. Miller to, Diane Glasser, City Commission member District 3, and presentation of Certificate of Election. Ralph Baer, representing Senator Jeremy ring, as well as friends and family, congratulated Commissioner Glasser on her election to the City Commission. A representative of Congressman Wexler's office congratulated both Commissioner Bushnell and Commissioner Glasser on their election to office. Commissioner Dressler welcomed Commissioner Bushnell and Commissioner Glasser to the City Commission and wished a fond farewell to Vice Mayor Sultanof and Commissioner Partner. Commissioner Atkins -Grad welcomed Commissioner Bushnell and Commissioner Glasser to the Commission and wished Vice Mayor Sultanof and Commissioner Portner a fond farewell. November 26, 2008 Page 1 of 2 City Clerk Swenson congratulated and welcomed Commissioner Bushnell and Commissioner Glasser to the Commission. City Attorney Goren congratulated Commissioner Bushnell and Commissioner Glasser on their election to the Commission and wished them good luck. City Manager Miller congratulated Commissioner Bushnell and Commissioner Glasser on behalf of himself and staff and said he looks forward to providing the same high quality service to the residents we have always provided. Commissioner Bushnell said this is a joyous day and thanked all the friends and family who helped her through the campaign. Commissioner Bushnell also referenced her attendance at Tamarac University. Commissioner Glasser thanked the friends and family who are here today and referenced her previous seat on the City Commission. Commissioner Glasser acknowledged former Mayor Scheiber and his wife, Mae, who were in the audience and thanked Vice Mayor Sultanof for his help. Commissioner Glasser said she wants the residents to know that when she votes on matters that come before the Mayor and City Commission her vote will be for the best interests of District 3 and the entire City. Commissioner Glasser said Tamarac has become a very sophisticated City and she would like to see it advance even more. Mayor Flansbaum-Talabisco said she is humbled and proud to be the Mayor of the City of Tamarac. Mayor Flansbaum-Talabisco acknowledged former Mayor Schreiber and his wife Mae, as well as Helen Portner, Mitch Ceasar, Barry Harris, activists from around the County and many community patriots in the audience. Mayor Flansbaum-Talabisco welcomed Commissioner Bushnell and Commissioner Glasser to the city hall family. Mayor Flansbaum- Talabisco thanked the Mayor and City Commission staff, Debbie DeCrane and Marie Abbandando for all their efforts in making this a smooth transition. Mayor Flansbaum- Talabisco spoke of savings to the City by holding elections on the same ballot as county elections. 4.
