There was discussion about Phase II of the Road Resurfacing Program. City Manager
Miller gave a presentation of the road -resurfacing program, and explained that in the
Woodmont Golf Course Community, in the process of repaving, several ficus trees had
to be removed on 78th Street and Mayor Schreiber received complaints from several
residents.
Vice Mayor Roberts said the residents had been notified that some of the trees would
have to be removed, and read from minutes of association meetings where it was
discussed. Vice Mayor Roberts said there is a large cost factor involved if the project is
stopped at this point. Commissioner Mishkin agreed with Vice Mayor Roberts that the
project should move forward and said he has confidence in the staff and their
recommendations. Commissioner Sultanof said if the trees are left standing when the
trees cause damage to the repaved areas in the future, it will then be up to the
Association to fund the repairs, not the City. Commissioner Sultanof said an
explanation should be given to the residents one more time, and the City should move
forward and take down the trees that have to be removed and replant new trees. Mayor
Schreiber said the Association held a meeting the other evening, but neither he nor Vice
Mayor Roberts were given notice of the meeting.
City Manager Miller said he and Public Works Director Verma would meet with those
who have concerns and then revisit the plans for the next area scheduled for repaving
and try to preserve any trees that can be saved.
Acting Engineer Heshem said the residents have been duly notified.
Mayor Schreiber said he was concerned whether residents were given proper notice,
but he feels the project must proceed. Vice Mayor Roberts said the paving is going to
be done in July when school is out. Commissioner Mishkin said the paving project has
gotten the most complementary comments from the public since he has been in
Tamarac. Commissioner Sultanof said there have been no complaints from the Isles of
