R-2017 - A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, REAFFIRMING TAMARAC'S ONGOING COMMITMENT TO BEING AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY AND CONTINUING TO PROVIDE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES THAT MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR DIVERSE COMMUNITY; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES, THE FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES, THE BROWARD LEAGUE OF CITIES, THE OTHER CITIES THROUGHOUT BROWARD COUNTY, AND ANY OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, initially established as a retirement community in 1963, the City of Tamarac has experienced and embraced a tremendous growth and diversification of our community; and WHEREAS, in 2007 the City Commission adopted the City's Strategic Goals, including Goal #1: Inclusive Community, which formally affirmed the City's ongoing commitment "to providing programs and services that meet the needs of an increasingly diverse community"; and WHEREAS, our nation's founding documents emphasize the freedoms of a society that embraces diversity in many different aspects; and Temp. Reso. #13005 August 24, 2017 Page 2 of 4 WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac opposes all forms of discrimination and takes great pride in supporting constitutional freedoms; and WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac encourages understanding and seeks to promote dialogue, the protection of civil liberties, and the building of alliances within our community that promote justice and mutual respect; and WHEREAS, as a community, Tamarac is strengthened by the traditions of its diverse population; and WHEREAS, all City of Tamarac residents deserve to live in a safe environment which promotes inclusion for all; and WHEREAS, no matter what name it travels under, hate is a virus that robs us of our safety and freedoms; and WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac continues to stand for values of inclusion, equity and justice and reaffirms its continuous commitment to embracing our community's diversity and ensuring excellent quality of life for all through safe neighborhoods, a vibrant economy, exceptional customer service, and recognized excellence; and WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac further confirms its continuous commitment to ensuring the equitable provision of programs and services regardless of one's religion, race, gender, ethnicity, national origin or sexual orientation; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac, deems it to be in the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City of Tamarac to reaffirm Tamarac's ongoing commitment to being an Inclusive Community. Reso. #13005 August 24, 2017 Page 3 of 4 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA THAT: SECTION 1: The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. SECTION 2: The City Commission hereby reaffirms Tamarac's ongoing commitment to being an Inclusive Community and restates its pledge to provide programs and services that meet the needs of our diverse community. SECTION 3: The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the National League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities, the Broward League of Cities, the other cities throughout Broward County, and any other interested parties. SECTION 4: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict. SECTION 5: If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this Resolution. SECTION 6: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption. n Temp.
