R-2009- 05- A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING THE "BUILDING CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY: BACK TO BASICS" INITIATIVE OF THE FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES, INC., AND PLEDGING SUPPORT FOR THIS STATEWIDE EFFORT; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, municipal government is the government closest to most citizens, with tremendous daily impact upon its residents; and WHEREAS, city government is administered for and by its citizens, and is dependent upon public commitment to, and understanding of, its many responsibilities, and city government officials and employees share the responsibility to pass along their understanding of public services and their benefits; and WHEREAS, Florida's citizenry receives public services from state, county, school district, and other government levels, educating Florida's citizens of all ages as to the structure and function of all the levels of government, and how to be wise consumers of such services is therefore critically important; and WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities and its member cities have joined together to teach students and all citizens about municipal government through a variety of different projects, resources and information; and WHEREAS, this initiative will make resources available to cities and their citizens to utilize in furthering their goals for civic education; and Temp. Reso. #11546 December 31, 2008 Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Commission of the City of Tamarac support the "Building Citizenship in the Community: Back to Basics" initiative of the Florida League of Cities, Inc. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA: SECTION 1: That the foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. SECTION 2: That the City of Tamarac does hereby encourage all citizens, city government officials and employees to utilize the opportunities and resources available through this initiative. SECTION 3: That the City of Tamarac does encourage educational partnerships between city government and schools, as well as civic groups and other organizations. SECTION 4: That the City of Tamarac does support and encourage all city governments to actively promote the "Building Citizenship in the Community: Back to Basics" initiative. SECTION 5: That the City Clerk is hereby authorized to forward a copy of this Resolution to the Florida League of Cities and all municipalities in Broward County. SECTION 6: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict. SECTION 7: If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or Temp. Reso. #11546 December 31, 2008 Page 3 of 3 application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this Resolution. SECTION 8: This resolution shall become effective immediately upon its passage and adoption. PASSED, ADOPTED AND APPROVED this / � day of January, 2009.
