Reso.#11648 Page 1 of 3 June 16, 2009 CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA RESOLUTION R2009- g(, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE SOUTH FLORIDA REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY'S INITIATIVE TO ENCOURAGE THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS AND THE STATE LEGISLATURE TO PROVIDE A FUNDING SOURCE FOR MASS TRANSIT IN SOUTH FLORIDA, AND REGIONAL MASS TRANSIT PROJECTS; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICT; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, South Florida, comprised of Broward, Miami -Dade and Palm Beach Counties, is the fifth largest urbanized area in the United States, and its population is expected to continue to increase over the next twenty (20) years; and WHEREAS, the region is currently plagued with traffic and congestion problems and that these problems are going to increase in the future; and WHEREAS, the increase in vehicular traffic will result in an increase in carbon emissions, and a corresponding reduction in air quality in the South Florida region; and WHEREAS, funding is needed to assist the region in providing for its residents and visitors to ensure that South Floridians and those visiting South Florida have sufficient transportation resources and efficient means of mobility and connectivity, as well as a mechanism for decreasing the carbon emissions from vehicles; and Temp. Reso.#11648 Page 2 of 3 June 16, 2009 WHEREAS, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (hereinafter referred to as "SFRTA"), seeks to provide a viable regional mass transportation system that serves the needs of the people of the region; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac, Florida deems SFRTA's initiative to be in the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA: Section 1. The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution upon adoption hereof. Section 2. The City of Tamarac hereby supports SFTRA's initiative to encourage the United States Congress and the State Legislature to provide a funding source for mass transit in South Florida, and regional mass transport projects. Section 4. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Bill Nelson, Senator Mel Martinez, members of the United States House of Representatives representing areas within the City of Tamarac, the Governor of the State of Florida, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House, each member of the Broward County Legislative Delegation, the Broward County Commission, the Mayor of each municipality in Broward County, the Florida League of Cities, and the Broward County League of Cities. 1 1 1 Temp. Reso.#11648 Page 3 of 3 June 16, 2009 Section 5. The appropriate City officials are hereby authorized to do all things necessary and expedient to carry out the provisions of this Resolution. Section 6. All resolutions inconsistent or in conflict herewith shall be and are hereby repealed insofar as there is conflict or inconsistency. Section 7. If any section, sentence, clause, or phrase of this resolution is held to be invalid or unconstitutional by any court of competent jurisdiction, then said holding shall in no way affect the validity of the remaining portions of this resolution. Section 8. This resolution shall become effective upon its passage and adoption by the City Commission.
