CITY OF TAMARAC
RESOLUTION NO. R-2007-
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
TAMARAC, FLORIDA, URGING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
AND THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO TAKE
ANY AND ALL ACTION NECESSARY TO PRESERVE AND
PROTECT THE LEVEE SYSTEM SURROUNDING LAKE
OKEECHOBEE; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICT; PROVIDING FOR
SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, in 2005, as a result of Hurricane Katrina, the United States
was exposed to the severity of the damage and devastation that could result
from the failure of a levee system; and
WHEREAS, Lake Okeechobee is surrounded by the 140-mile long
Herbert Hoover Dike, and a failure of the dike could have a catastrophic impact
on the surrounding areas including, but not limited to Hendry County and the rest
of South Florida; and
WHEREAS, in May 2006 an engineering report stated that the dike posed
a grave threat to the people and environment of South Florida; and
WHEREAS, in October 2006 the Army Corps of Engineers released a
plan calling for an increase in the stability of the dike; and
WHEREAS, in 2006 members of the Florida Congressional Delegation
urged Congress to reclassify the dike as a dam, which would trigger additional

engineering studies and federal funding to ensure protection of Lake
Okeechobee and preservation of the surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac deems it to be in
the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City as well as the South
Florida community for the state and federal government to take any and all action
necessary to preserve and protect the dike system surrounding Lake
Okeechobee.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA THAT:
Section 1. The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and
confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this
Resolution.
Section 2. The City Commission of the City of Tamarac hereby urges
the Federal Government and the Legislature of the State of Florida to take any
and all action necessary to preserve and protect the dike surrounding Lake
Okeechobee. The City Commission further urges the State and Federal
Government to take all steps necessary to ensure the survival of Lake
Okeechobee and to safeguard the communities surrounding the lake.

Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to provide a certified copy
of this Resolution to the Governor of the State of Florida, the Speaker of the
Florida House of Representatives, the President of the Florida Senate, the
members of the Broward County Legislative delegation, the Florida League of
Cities, the Broward League of Cities, members of the Florida Congressional
Delegation, and the Board of County Commissioners for Broward County.
Section 4. All resolutions or parts of resolutions on in conflict herewith
be, and the same are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.
Section 5. If any clause, section, other part or application of this
Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or
invalid, in part or application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining
portions or applications of this Resolution.

Section 6. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its
passage and adoption.
