CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA
RESOLUTION NO. R-2001-137
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THAT THE
POSTMASTER GENERAL PROVIDE FOR MUNICIPAL
IDENTITY OF TAMARAC BY THE ELIMINATION OF THE
DEFAULT DESIGNATION OF FORT LAUDERDALE; TO
PROVIDE THAT MAIL SENT TO TAMARAC ZIP CODES
BE DESIGNATED AS TAMARAC AND NOT FORT
LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA; AND CLARIFY TO ALL THAT
TAMARAC IS A CITY IN ITS OWN RIGHT; DIRECTING THE
CITY CLERK TO FORWARD A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO THE POSTMASTER GENERAL AND
CONGRESSMAN ROBERT WEXLER; PROVIDING FOR
CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, many Tamarac residents receive mail addressed to Fort Lauderdale, the U.S.
Postal Service's "default address" for Tamarac; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission discussed this issue in 1995, and the Post Office was
contacted in an effort to change the default designation from Fort Lauderdale to Tamarac; and
WHEREAS, the practice has not changed; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac believes that the default designation should be
Tamarac; and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the City Commission that the Postmaster General provide for

municipal identity of Tamarac by the elimination of the default designation of Fort Lauderdale; to
provide that mail sent to Tamarac zip codes be designated as Tamarac and not Fort Lauderdale,
Florida; and clarify to all that Tamarac is a city in its own right; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac, Florida, deems it to be in the best
interest of the citizens and residents of the City of Tamarac that the Postmaster General provide for
municipal identity of Tamarac by the elimination of the default designation of Fort Lauderdale; to
provide that mail sent to Tamarac zip codes be designated as Tamarac and not Fort Lauderdale,
Florida; and to clarify to all that Tamarac is a city in its own right.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
TAMARAC, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: The foregoing WHEREAS clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being
true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution.
SECTION 2: That the City Commission of the City of Tamarac hereby requests the
Postmaster General provide for municipal identity of Tamarac by the elimination of the default
designation of Fort Lauderdale; to provide that mail sent to Tamarac zip codes be designated as
Tamarac and not Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and to clarify to all that Tamarac is a city in its own right.
SECTION 3: That the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to the
Postmaster General and Congressman Robert Wexler.
SECTION 3: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are hereby
repealed to the extent of such conflict.

SECTION 4: If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is held by
any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or application, it shall
not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this Resolution.
SECTION 5: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon adoption.
