CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA
RESOLUTION NO. R-98-305
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE
REAUTHORIZATION OF THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT
FOR A THREE YEAR PERIOD INITIATING JANUARY 1,
1999, OR SOONER, TO HELP ASSURE THE MERITED
RIGHT OF THE NATION'S ELDERS TO LIVE THEIR
RETIREMENT YEARS WITH MERITED DIGNITY;
PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR
SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
WHEREAS, since its passage in 1965, the Federal Older Americans Act has been
the prime funding source for aging programs benefitting the multiple needs of the Nation's
elders who have reached the age of 60 and older; and
WHEREAS, this vital legislation provides appropriations to support senior centers,
Meals on Wheels, transportation, adult day care, homemakers, legal, home repair,
information and referral services planned by local Area Agencies on Aging to help delay
or prevent institutionalization; and
WHEREAS, Florida is the year-round home of over 3,313,841 senior citizens, many
of whom rely on Older Americans Act Services for their daily sustenance; and
WHEREAS, the Older Americans Act has been calendared for reauthorization in
1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998, but placed on a continuation budget for each of the specific
years; and

WHEREAS, the legislation usually is reauthorized for a three or four consecutive
year period; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac, Florida deems it to be in
the best interests of the citizens and residents of the City of Tamarac to support the
reauthorization of the Older Americans Act for a three year period initiating January 1,
1999, or sooner, to help assure the merited right of the Nation's elders to live their
retirement years with merited dignity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and
confirmed as being true and correct and is hereby made a specific part of this Resolution.
SECTION 2: That the City Commission of the City of Tamarac supports the
reauthorization of the Older Americans Act for a three year period initiating January 1,
1999, or sooner, to help assure the merited right of the Nation's elders to live their
retirement years with merited dignity; and
SECTION 3: That the Congress of the United States be requested to
reauthorize the Older Americans Act within the suggested timeframes; and
SECTION 4: That a copy of this resolution be sent to the President of the
United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States
House of Representatives, and the members of Florida's State and Congressional

Delegations.
SECTION 5: All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith are
hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict.
SECTION 6: If any clause, section, other part or application of this
Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid,
in part or application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications
of this Resolution.
SECTION 7: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its
passage and adoption.
