R-98- 366 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA, STRONGLY URGING THAT THE BROWARD COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TAKE ALL NECESSARY STEPS TO MAKE ADEQUATE PROVISION FOR THE EDUCATION OF THE CHILDREN OF TAMARAC BY TAKING THE NECESSARY ACTION TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SCHOOL FACILITIES IN TAMARAC TO RELIEVE CRITICAL OVERCROWDING AT TAMARAC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Tamarac Elementary School was designed for a total enrollment of 860 students; and WHEREAS, 1420 children currently attend Tamarac Elementary School; and WHEREAS, Tamarac Elementary School has been officially designated and recognized as a school that is critically overcrowded; and WHEREAS, consistent with recently revised Florida Constitution Article IX, Section 1, the education of children is a fundamental value of the people of the State of Florida, and it is therefore a paramount duty of the Broward County School Board to make adequate provisions for the education of all children residing within the City of Tamarac; and 1 2 Temp. Reso. #8470 November 24, 1998 WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac has been disregarded by previous members of the Broward School Board in its repeated requests to grant relief to the children of Tamarac from oppressive and overcrowded conditions of Tamarac Elementary School; and WHEREAS, available land currently exists to build a new school in the City of Tamarac; and WHEREAS, the Broward County School Board must move quickly to acquire the necessary land before it becomes unavailable; and WHEREAS, no less than a 12 room addition needs to be added to the existing Tamarac Elementary School; and WHEREAS, the Tamarac Facilities Task Force, consisting of representatives of the Community, the City and the Broward County School Board have investigated the overcrowding problem at Tamarac Elementary School; and WHEREAS, the Tamarac Facilities Task Force concurs with the recommendations contained herein and has requested the assistance of all concerned parties in dealing with this unacceptable situation; and WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Tamarac deems it to be of the highest priority that the overcrowded conditions of Tamarac Elementary School be relieved; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA: 1 3 Temp. Reso. #8470 November 24, 1998 SECTION 1: The foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. SECTION 2: The City Commission of the City of Tamarac strongly urges the Broward County School Board to take all necessary steps to make adequate provision for the education of the children of Tamarac by taking necessary action including providing an additional school and proceeding with a 12 room addition to the existing structure to relieve critical overcrowding at Tamarac Elementary School. SECTION 3: The City Clerk is directed to send certified copies of this Resolution to all members of the Broward County School Board, the Superintendent of Schools, Senator Walter "Skip" Campbell and State Representative Stacy Ritter. SECTION 4: If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this Resolution. 1 4 Temp.
