RESOLUTION NO. -11 ----- 1
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF TAMARAC URGING BROWARD COUNTY AND,
SPECIFICALLY, THE BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSION,
IN COORDINATION WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION, TO PROCEED WITH THE PLANNING,
DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE UNIVERSITY-
DEERFIELD PARKWAY, AS WELL AS THE PORT EXPRESS-
WAY SYSTEM
WHEREAS, Broward County, over the past thirty years,
has experienced a tremendous growth in population; and,
WHEREAS, said population growth, rather than diminish-
ing, is increasing, placing Broward County as one of the foremost
growth areas in the United States; and,
WHEREAS, within Broward County, western Broward County
is experiencing a population growth far exceeding the remainder of
the county; and,
WHEREAS, western Broward County presently lacks a major
north -south expressway; and,
WHEREAS, such a limited access expressway in western
Broward County would lessen traffic on adjacent arterials and
local streets, thereby promoting the safety and welfare of the
citizens of Broward County; and,
WHEREAS, to meet said need a major limited access
expressway known as the University -Deerfield Parkway has been pro-
posed to be financed by the issuance of self-liquidating bonds; and,
WHEREAS, at the same time the planned multimillion
dollars expansion of the Fort Lauderdale -Hollywood Airport, in
central Broward County, will produce an inevitable increased air-
port traffic, which, in turn, will create an inevitable congestion
of north -south traffic on Interstate Highway 95; and,
am
WHEREAS, this traffic congestion can best be relieved
by a second limited access expressway, heretofore designed the
Port Expressway, running from Port Everglades west to interconnect
with the proposed "north -south University -Deerfield Parkway"; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Tamarac
believes that the construction of these two limited access express-
ways is inevitable if traffic in Broward County is to be managed
with safety and economy in mind; and,
WHEREAS, due to inflation, delays in the preparation
of engineering plans and specifications as well as construction will
greatly add to the overall cost to the citizens of Broward County;
and ,
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Tamarac believes
that the early completion of the University -Deerfield Parkway, as
well as the Port Expressway system, is in the best interests of
the citizens of Tamarac, as well as in the best interests of the
citizens of Broward County at large.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: That the City of Tamarac hereby recognizes
the urgent need for the Broward County Commission, as well as the
State Department of Transportation, to immediately fund the cost
necessary for the preparation of engineering plans and specifica-
tions so as to immediately implement the construction of the
University -Deerfield Parkway and the Port Expressway system and
urges both the Broward County Commission and the State Department
of Transportation to immediately take action on these two con-
struction projects, which are of critical importance to the growth
of Broward County.
