CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA
RESOLUTION NO. R- 2-'-g
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL URGING THE
STATE OF FLORIDA TO LOWER TOLLS FOR THAT
SEGMENT OF THE TURNPIKE SOUTH OF PALM BEACH
COUNTY AND URGING THAT A FEASIBILITY STUDY
BE DONE TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL LANES AND
INTERCHANGES FOR THE TURNPIKE IN BROWARD
COUNTY.
WHEREAS, the State of Florida, is considering raising the
tolls for motorists using Florida's Sunshine State Turnpike, and
WHEREAS, motorists utilizing the Turnpike south of Palm Beach
County, including Broward County, already pay a premium of 1.1 per
mile, over the rate established north of Palm Beach County, and
WHEREAS, it is axiomatic that the demand for toll facilities
varies inversely to price increases where there are alternate routes
available, and
WHEREAS, Broward County, with the population nearing one
million, has alternates, both overcrowded, North -South routes available,
to wit: I-95, U.S. 1, State Road #7, and University Drive, and
WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac with an estimated population of
35,000 people has only one major East-West arterial road, known as
Commercial Boulevard, which intersects with the Florida Turnpike and
all three alternate North -South routes referenced above, and which
roadway is therefore heavily travelled, and
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Tamarac firmly believes
that encouraging more local traffic on the Turnpike by lowering the
tolls, would serve to alleviate traffic congestion problems on Commer-
cial Boulevard, as well as alternate North -South routes I-95, U.S. 1,
State Road #7, and University Drive, and would be to the mutual benefit
of the State of Florida, Broward County and the City of Tamarac.

of providing additional lanes and interchanges for the Turnpike in
Broward County, which will also serve to promote greater usage of the
