This report was prepared by the Community Development Department Staff.
91 _/ s,
EX C TIVE MM RY
In July of 1993, the City Commission authorized the installation of nine (9) City Entryway
signs and adjacent landscaping on medians throughout the City. Since that time, several of the
City's existing entryway signs have either been stolen, damaged, or the wood has rotted.
In October of 1996, the City Commission approved the Master Landscape Plan, which
recommended improvements to the City's medians, streetscapes, and entryway features. There
have been two (2) City Commission workshops on the Entryway Signage Program, with the latest
being held on February 5, 1997. At that workshop, the Commission expressed concern about the
overall cost of the program, and directed the staff to scale the proposals back. They also directed
staff to obtain cost estimates from various sign companies. This has now been accomplished, and
the results are included in this report.
The Community Development Department staff recommends replacing the existing
entryway signage with new entryway signage of a contemporary design to help improve the
appearance of the City's major arterials. Cost estimates were obtained from three (3) local sign
companies. Aluminum materials are the recommended choice for use in the construction of the
signs, as it is light weight, and can be molded to look similar to a stucco / stone finish. The
Welleby signs in Sunrise are made of aluminum materials, and have been able to endure the
weather.
Design alternatives for the entryway signs have been solicited by Testa Signs of Hollywood,
Signs Company of Fort Lauderdale, and Sign Makers of Florida in Pompano Beach. These
,Art
hree (3) companies have put together new sign proposals and applicable cost information. The
designs are on the following pages for your review and consideration. Testa Signs of Hollywood
has proposed a cost of $1,265 per sign, which includes the installation and the removal of
existing signs. Included with their proposal was an example of the material as well as a
conceptual design. Sign Makers of Florida has proposed a price of $1,200 per sign, which
includes the installation, but does not include the removal of existing signs which would be
additional. Art Signs Company has proposed a cost of $1,250 per sign, which includes the
installation of new signs, and the removal of existing signs. Art Signs Company has included
renderings of the proposed signage which is also included in the report.
-RECOMMENDATION:
As indicated within the City's Master Landscape Plan, there are currently thirteen (13)
entryway points throughout the City. The Community Development Department staff has
compared the three (3) company proposals based upon designs submitted, the costs associated
with the placement of the new signs and removal of existing signs, and recommends the design
proposal submitted by Art Signs Company be chosen. Art Signs Company has done business
with the City of Tamarac previously, and the staff has found the signs installed to be of high
quality. The cost breakdown of the program as provided by Art Signs Company is as follows:
Removal of Existing Signs and Construction
and Installation of (13) Entryway Signs : $ 16,250.00
Adjacent Landscape Treatments : $ 8,750.00
Total Estimated Construction Cost(s) : $ 25,000.00
