CITY OF TAMARAC, FLORIDA
RESOLUTION NO. R-91- 6g
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF FUNDING FOR THE
CONTINUOUS PROGRESS SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAM IN
BROWARD COUNTY; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE
WHEREAS, the schools and the entire community have a well-defined
responsibility and common interest in the education, welfare and safety
of our children; and
WHEREAS, in fulfilling this responsibility, the school system has
offered a Continuous Progress Summer School Program wherein students
were provided a well -organized, supervised, and structured education
program from early morning until noon. During this time, the students
were provided both breakfast and lunch; and
WHEREAS, after dismissal from the morning program, the cities of
Broward County fulfilled their responsibilities to the children and
their parents by providing a supervised afternoon enrichment and
recreation program. This program was a needed service to the many
parents who would have been left without after -school supervision for
their children; and
WHEREAS, as a result of providing the full -day summer school
program for our students, law enforcement agencies have reported that
there was a reduction in crime, less vandalism, relief for children and
youth who would otherwise be "on the streets," and needed assistance for
latchkey children and their parents; and
WHEREAS, this summer school program proved to be a committed
partnership effort on the part of the school system, municipalities, law
enforcement agencies, and the entire community. Additionally, the
sitive impact this prograrn has had on the students and the community
without question; and

WHEREAS, because of the budget shortfall message which is being
sent from Governor Chiles and the legislators, the School Boaxd will not
be able to fund the 1991 Continuous Progress Summer School Program which
would amount to 20.5 million dollars in revenue; 1 million dollars inl
federal revenue for breakfast and lunch for economically needy children.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC,
FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: The City of Tamarac, in conjunction with other
municipalities, Broward County Commission, and the School Board of
Broward County, Florida, hereby extends its support of funding for the
Continuous Progress Summer School Program in Broward County; and urges
the Governor and the legislature to provide the necessary funds for the
continuation of this badly needed program for our children and youth.
SECTION 2: This Resolution shall become effective immediately
upon adoption.
