RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE NEED FOR WIDENING OF
UNIVERSITY DRIVE (STATE ROAD 817) THROUGH THE CITY
OF TAMARAC, PROVIDING FOR A PERMANENT EIGHT (8)
FOOT WIDE BIKEWAY ALONG THE WESTERN TWO HUNDRED
(200) FOOT RIGHT-OF-WAY LINE OF UNIVERSITY DRIVE
AND WITHDRAWING TAMARAC'S REQUEST FOR BIKEWAY
CONSTRUCTION FUNDS ASSISTANCE FROM STATE OF
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.
WHEREAS, University Drive (State Road 817) is a major North -South
transportation artery in Broward County; and
WHEREAS, the portion of University Drive from Commercial Boulevard,
South for 1.7 miles in the City of Lauderhill has been designated by the
Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization, Transportation Improve-
ment Program (TIP) and the Florida Department of Transportation for widening
from four (4) to six (6) lanes in fiscal year 1983/1984 (State Road Project
Number 410248); and
WHEREAS, University Drive from Southgate Boulevard, North in the
City of Coral Springs has already been widened to six (6) lanes; and
WHEREAS, the widening of University Drive from four (4) lanes to
six (6) lanes through the City of Tamarac is needed to serve present and
future traffic needs, and to prevent a bottleneck of traffic or a safety
hazard; and
WHEREAS, the State of Florida Department of Transportation has
allocated funds to construct an eight (8) foot wide bikeway along the
current western one hundred and six (106) feet right-of-way line of
University Drive; and
WHEREAS, said bikeway will conflict with the University Drive road
widening program; and
WHEREAS, the most appropriate location of the eight (8) foot wide bike-
way is along the future western two hundred (200) foot right-of-way line
planned for University Drive.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
TAMARAC, FLORIDA:
SECTION 1: That the City of Tamarac hereby declares its intentions
for constructing an eight (8) foot wide permanent bikeway along the
western two hundred (200) foot right-of-way line planned for University
Drive in the City limits.
SECTION 2: That the City of Tamarac shall pass the necessary
ordinances or special assessments required to insure the future
construction of the eight (8) foot wide bikeway.
SECTION 3: That the City of Tamarac respectfully requests that the
Florida Department of Transportation exchange the allocation of funds for
construction of said bikeway for funding in an amount equal to those funds
still remaining to the higher priority design element of the University Drive
widening project.
SECTION 4: That the City Clerk shall distribute copies of this Resolution
to the appropriate State and County officials.
SECTION 5: This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon
adoption.
PASSED, ADOPTED AND APPROVED this day of 1503.
