RESOLUTION NO. R-82-3,?3
A RESOLUTION URGING THE FLORIDA PUBLIC SERVICE
COMMISSION TO DENY THE PENDING PETITION BY
SOUTHERN BELL TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH COMPANY
FOR AN INCREASE IN RATES AND CHARGES.
WHEREAS, Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company (hereinafter
"Southern Bell") on November 21, 1982, petitioned the Florida Public Service
Commission (hereinafter "P.S.C.") for an increase in the Southern Bell rate
schedule, requesting a hearing within 60 days; and
WHEREAS, the "P.S.C." on November 25, 1981 had already authorized a
rate schedule increase for "Southern Bell" effective December 1, 1981, which
will generate revenues in the approximate amount of 140 million dollars; and
WHEREAS, by the "P.S.C.'s" own study, "Southern Bell" has been found
to have a rate of return on its equity of 10.24%; and
WHEREAS, many blue chip American corporations are operating at a loss
in these troubled financial times; and
WHEREAS, so many South Floridian Senior Citizens are on a fixed income;
and
WHEREAS, measured service is part of the rate increase proposal and
the public on several occasions has stated its objection to this form of billing;
and
WHEREAS, the Tamarac City Council feels that this is an inappropriate
time for a utility such as "Southern Bell" to expand its profit margin at an
expense to its consumers,
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of
Tamarac, Florida:
SECTION I: That the City Council go on record that it opposes
any action by the "P.S.C." that would resu* in an increase in the rate schedule
of "Southern Bell".

SECTION 2: That the City Council urges the "P.S.C" to deny the
petition of "Southern Bell" for permission to increase its rates and charges
(Docket No. 820294-TP).
SECTION 3: That the City Clerk is directed to send a certified
copy of the Resolution to:
Public Service Commission
Ta]lahassee, Florida
Broward League of Cities
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Florida League of Cities
Tallahassee, Florida
as evidence of its strong convictions in this matter.
