RESOLUTION NO. R-82-0990
A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE ELEVEN MONTH/ONE
PENNY SALES TAX; OPPOSING THE REFERENDUM
REGARDING THE PASSAGE OF SUCH TAX AND THE
EXPENDITURES OF THE REVENUES TO BE EARNED
THEREFROM; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the citizens of Broward County are facing increasing
difficult economic times as a result of the recession which has
plagued the Country for several years; and
WHEREAS, the costs of goods and essential services are continu
ing to increase to the extent that more and more families are require
to lower their standards of living in order to adjust to the shrinkin
buying power of the dollar; and
WHEREAS, the County Commission and other taxing authorities of
the County have been required to effect budget -cutting methods to save
revenues, as a result of which various social and educational service
programs have been phased out for lack of funding; and
WHEREAS, the City of Tamarac has held its budget to the barest
minimum increase to reduce costs to its citizens; and
WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon all political bodies to urge
restraint in all expenditures; and
WHEREAS, in light of the economic hardships which the citizens
of the County are facing and in light of the services which have al-
ready fallen to the budget -cutting axe, the proposed expenditures of
the eleven month/one penny sales tax revenues appear to be frivolous
expenditures on luxury items which should be funded by the private
sector interests who will directly benefit from them; and
WHEREAS, plans have not been developed for proposed locations
of the various facilities; and
WHEREAS, provisions for costs of maintenance and upkeep of the
properties have not been presented to the public.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TAMARAC,
FLORIDA:

SECTION l: That the City of Tamarac hereby expresses its
opposition to the passage of the referendum on the November ballot
concerning the eleven month/one penny sales tax and the use of such
sales tax funds to establish a performing arts center, various commun-
ity centers and the refurbishment of the Davie Rodeo, and the City
Council urges a NO vote on such referendum question.
SECTION 2: That the City Clerk is hereby authorized and direct
ed to provide copies of this Resolution to each of the Broward County
Commissioners, to each of the cities comprising Broward County, and to
the Broward County League of Cities.
SECTION 3: This Resolution shall become effective upon passage
PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this day of , 1982
