CITY OF TAMAARAC, FLORIDA
RESOLUTION NO.$�/=�
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING CONGRESS TO TAKE ACTIONS TO REDUCE
EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN: AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide interact with moisture in
the air producing acid rain, which includes sulfuric acid and nutric acid; and
WHEREAS, these pollutants emitted into the atmosphere from fossil
fuel combustion, create a worldwide and international threat; and
WHEREAS, pollutants produced in the United States are particularly
threatening to Canada, with whom Broward County has long enjoyed strong
economic ties in -the form of tourism which is vital to our economy; and
WHEREAS, Tamarac would not want any action by the United States
Government to destroy the bond between the people of Broward County, South
Florida and Canada; and
WHEREAS, acid rain has caused the death of the fish population in
certain lake areas of Canada, the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, and
other sections in the northeast United States; and
WHEREAS, acid rain is a growing problem and threat throughout the
State of Florida as explained in Science, Vol. 208, May 30, 1980; and
WHEREAS, acid rain has damaged crops, lakes, fish, soil, forests,
statutes, property and its effects on human beings has not yet been determined.
NOW; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
TAMARACi FLORIDA, that:
SECTION l: The Council urges the United States Congress to take
steps to reduce the acid rain problem by:
(a) Requiring the lowering of smokestacks so that
emissions are not able to remain aloft and travel great distances;
(b) Requiring the installation of pollution control
devices designed to reduce sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions;
(c) Retaining and affirming enforcement of emission
standards on all motor vehicles; and
(d) Requiring the use and burning of clean, low-
34 sulfur fuels.
35 SECTION 2: The United States Congress not weaken the Clean Air
36 Act of 1970 and the 1977 amendments to that Act to follow for increased
emissions into the air.

SECTION 3: The United States Congress weigh and consider the
international consequences of acid rain and move expeditiously to assist
private and government operated power plants in dealing with and resolving
this worldwide problem.
SECTION 4: This Resolution shall become effective upon its
passage.
